5S and Labeling

Use Labels For Effective Visual Communication

Labels are used to communicate information visually. 5s relies upon the visual organization of space. That means that clear and precise labels are a necessary component of 5S.

Visual Communication Using LabelsThis photo of cleaning tools shows the three key methods of visual communication:

Label Shape: The location for each tool is indicated by a shadow showing the tool's shape.

Label Color: Color coding simplifies organization by making groupings of like items immediately apparent.

Label Text (and images): Communicates specific information and eliminates confusion. Text needs to be short and directly to the point.

In the above example each tool is identified by labels using all three of these visual communication methods. The orange color identifies these as cleaning tools. The shadows make the storage location of each tool easily known. The text labels clearly identify each tool, such that when a worker is asked to get the "chimney brush" they know exactly which tool is needed.

All of the above labels where made with a DuraLabel printer and DuraLabel supplies.

The DuraLabel PRO can print labels and signs with whatever text or graphics that are needed.

The tool shadows were made using DuraLabel vinyl tape. Using vinyl type is much faster and easier than painting shadows. Just apply the self-adhesive DuraLabel vinyl tape, in the appropriate color, to the area where the shadow is to be located. Hold the tool in place on top of the vinyl tape and use an Exacto knife to trace the tool, cutting the vinyl. Then peel away the unwanted portion of the tape.

If the surface would be damaged by peeling off the vinyl tape, do not stick it to that surface. Without removing the paper backing lay out of the vinyl tape on a table using masking tape to hold the vinyl tape in place. After it has been cut to the required shape remove the backing and stick it in place.

Becoming more efficient and productive is easy with the Duralabel PRO Printer. Long lasting, OSHA safety signs, hazard warning labels, directional signs, identification signs and labels, and equipment maintenance and operating information... because they are easy to read, form the basis of a 5s process.
