OSHA Safety Signs & Labels
When a hazard cannot be eliminated, safety signs and labels must be used to warn people about and provide information for the hazard. There are four types of safety signs and labels:
Danger Signs: a DANGER sign or label is used when there is a hazard that poses an immediate danger. OSHA requires that danger signs not have any variation in format throughout the facility.
Caution Signs: CAUTION signs are used to indicate a potentially hazardous situation that, if not avoided, could result in a minor or moderate injury or in equipment damage.
Warning Signs: a WARNING sign indicates a potentially hazardous condition that falls between DANGER and CAUTION in severity. The hazard is serious enough that it could result in death or serious injury, if not avoided.
Notice/Safety Signs: a NOTICE or SAFETY sign provides general information that is instructional or relevant to a building, area, machine, vehicle, or equipment. The information is not crucial for safety, but is important.
